Labellers for the food & beverage field: flexibility for Madama Oliva

Madama Oliva, an Italian family business with a long tradition in olive processing, wanted to innovate the labelling of its trays by switching to a flexible and modern three-sided system to replace the current outdated machine.

Labelpack developed a two-head, non-stop labelling system with side conveyor transport. This solution optimises productivity by reducing machine downtimes, as well as introducing the possibility of using the two heads separately with different labels.

The excellent results obtained with this system and the relationship of trust and collaboration that has been established, have led Madama Oliva to entrust Labelpack with the realisation of other labelling machines for different needs, with the aim of bringing innovation to company processes.

The Problem

Outdated industrial labelling solutions

The labelling of plastic olive trays requires a two-sided (“L” shaped) or three-sided (“C” shaped) application, which serves both to inform the consumer about the characteristics of the product and to guarantee the integrity of the package by acting as a seal.

Madama Oliva’s industrial labelling solution was outdated, with a flat-belt conveyor belt arranged at 90° to the previous machine. This system limited the application to “L” labelling, covering only the top and front of the trays.

The company wanted to upgrade the system to allow the application of the label on three sides, thus transforming the system from an “L” to a “C”. This adaptation also allows the bottom of the pack to be used to provide complete information that complies with food industry regulations, including details on ingredients, allergens, origin and storage methods.

Considering the initial needs, Madama Oliva identified three basic needs:

  • Replacement of obsolete machinery: the existing system was no longer able to meet the growing production and compliance needs;
  • Greater flexibility in label application: by switching from an “L” system to a “C” system, the company can now use all the space available on the package, ensuring more complete communication to consumers;
  • Improved production efficiency: the goal was to optimize the production flow, reducing downtime and improving the overall quality of labeling.

These needs have led to the development of an advanced labeling system, Madama Oliva can now ensure that each tray meets the information and safety requirements, improving both the consumer experience and regulatory compliance.

The solution

An automatic labeling machine for the food & beverage sector

Madama Oliva decided to rely on our know-how for the creation of an automatic labeling machine for the food & beverage sector after having experienced a similar system during the last edition of Cibus Tec, the Italian event dedicated to new technologies in the food sector.

Through careful consulting and analysis, we have designed and implemented a tailor-made system for Madama Oliva, capable of meeting its specific needs and satisfying its high standards of quality and productivity.

MODULAR MS NON STOP, Industrial Marking for High Performance Food Sector

The project includes an advanced two-headed industrial marking system for the food sector, configurable to operate in non-stop mode. The trays are transported on side belts, thus allowing the label to be applied on the bottom as well, unlike the previous system in which the trays rested directly on the belt.

Thanks to the double labelling head, the system can manage massive productions without interruptions and, at the same time, offers the flexibility of using the two labellers independently for smaller productions or for the application of different labels. In both cases, operational continuity is guaranteed, eliminating downtime due to reel changes and ensuring superior productivity.

Implementation and Results

The installation was completed on time, also managing to label an additional format not initially planned. In addition, the system fully met the objective of labelling on three sides, exactly as required.
The staff was properly trained during the installation of the machine, which took place directly on the production line.

The project met Madama Oliva’s needs, introducing a labelling system that improved flexibility and productivity, reduced downtime and increasing overall efficiency.

The future perspective: advanced labelling systems

Our collaboration with Madama Oliva started in 2020 with the installation of a “C” labelling system for trays, which included a manual loading phase by operators. Thanks to our design expertise and ongoing support, we have built a relationship of trust that has led the company to turn to us again for other labelling systems.

In 2024, the successful implementation of the advanced two-headed non-stop labeling system and the results obtained consolidated the collaboration, so that Madama Oliva also entrusted us with a new project for a one-headed system, currently under development.

This partnership demonstrates our ability to deliver high-quality solutions that not only meet the company’s needs, but also improve and innovate their labeling processes while optimizing productivity.
